Who is a Periodontist?
A periodontist is a dentist who specialises in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of the tooth supporting tissues called periodontal disease and implant therapy such as implant placement, maintenance and repair. The training pathway to become a Specialist Periodontist in Australia is competitive and comprehensive. Most specialists would have average training time of 8-10 years with a mixture of university, hospital and general practice. This include 5-7 years of training to be a dentist followed by an additional three years of post-graduate training.
